Thing 13: Never too Young

June 21st, 2009

In the short video Never too Young we were able to get a true understanding of the different ways that twaxheea uaw technology in their classroom.  I know that in 2nd grade, we already use Voicethreads and Blogs.  Even though I think that Voicethreads is a fun site to visit, I did not use it a lot thise year.  However, blogs were something that were used almost daily.  It was a great way for the commmunicate not only with me, but also with their classmates.  I also feel that it gave the parent some accountability to make sure their child was writing a relevant comment.  At times, I found that the students would become bored with Voicethreads  and were much more interested in Animoto, Audacity, blogs, etc.

The main point of this blog was to show the many different tools that are available to help students learn.  Not all children learn in the same way, and sometimes, certain things “click” when technology is incorporated.  I absolutely loved having this conference online.  I was literally able to do it in my pajamas.  Because I could do it from home, I would be more incl inced to participate in another “conference” since it was so easy!

I had never herd of Dipidity and it sounds like a very cool website.  I will have to check it out and see if it could be using in conjunction with our Social Studies curriculum.  Overall, I thought that this was a great “Thing,” and I would be more than willing to participate again.

I also viewed “Never Too Young”. I teach 1st grade and have never used a blog before. After watching her video, if sounds very interesting and worth trying. I did some exploring through Dipity, even made my own timeline up. It is very interesting and I think the kids will really enjoy making up their own timeline about themselves. I cannot wait to try it for the next school year.

I think is is great that as early as 2nd grade…students are already blogging, using voicethreads, making slide shows, etc. I am very excited for my daughter who will be a 2nd grader at WA next year. She already knows a whole lot more about the computer and its capabilities than I do. Also, thanks for the comments about voicethreads….

Never Too Young seems very interesting. I will definitely take a look at the session. Students learn technology tools much faster than we expect. Multimedia tools are really powerful for boosting their creative ideas. With web 2.0, learners can access these types of tools any time, anywhere, which makes it possible for teachers to assign homework assignments as video productions, slide shows or voicethread projects.
